Traditionally, the surfers in these films are the golden boys and girls who ride the waves to the song of the Beach Boys and seem to live in the air. Blue Crush knows that many non-professional surfers have to endure the pain of supporting their surfing because it is the only time they really feel alive.
In Blue Crush we meet three Hawaiian surfers who work as hotel clerks, live in grotesque rented apartments and are raised by their little sisters, one of whom is a little sister. They look great despite their near poverty, but there is nothing about their tans and bikinis that transcends their class differences.
Anne - Marie almost goes under while competing in the US Open of Surfing, the most prestigious surfing competition in the world, and is back in competition, encouraged by her sister, who seems to be taking her career more seriously. Both women's lives involve surfing at dawn and surfing at dusk, but they are more concerned with their bodies than with their careers, families and lives.
After rescuing her mother, Anne-Marie is raised by Penny (Mika Booren), who attends a local school but does not always deliver on time. The story is about a working-class kid who flees his home in the middle of the night to live a better life in a more affluent area of Los Angeles. Based on the novel of the same name and the short story "Blue Crush," this film is similar to Saturday Night Fever, which was inspired by Nik Cohn's journalism.
When she stops at a gas station and sees a famous professional surfer at the pump who is in Hawaii for a major tournament, she hears the fascination in his voice. It is true that Anne-Marie can make money as a member of a professional surfing team, but it is also true that she is distracted by other things, and there is not a single focused career.
One day, when Anne-Marie dares to march to the beach and show a giant football linesman that Kleenex is wrapping a used condom, she is fired, and she has the pride of a bitter worker. The surf scenes in the film are among the best photographed, but we don't see much of it, as we have seen in many other films dating back to Bruce Brown's Endless Summer (1966) on the plinth. We also have a working woman advising others not to resign out of compassion, but to pay the rent. Three maids dealing with the aftermath of messy parties with professional footballers and trying on expensive swimsuits in a room full of rich women have a sense of zest for life, though we see nothing of it.
Quarterback Matt Tollman (Matthew Davis) asks her, and after talking about politics and nonfraternities, she accepts him and falls in love with him. Anne-Marie focuses on the fact that footballers are not villains, but a date with a big contest is fast approaching.
Here's the thing: This is a holiday romance, so it's not really meant to mean anything. Everyone seems nice, attentive and genuine, but the plot is everything and no one really cares about it.
Anne - Marie wouldn't mind a holiday romance, but she wants to know what it is and she doesn't want to risk her heart unnecessarily. Eden is tougher and more cynical than her friends, so the film is realistic here, too. And then, of course, it ends, and we all remember: "Me" I'm sorry, Anne-Marie, you have to go.
If you look at the poster for Blue Crush, which shows Bosworth and Rodriguez-Lake posing in bikinis and on surfboards, you might expect a mindless surf movie. Anglo-Latino is also looking here, but even here they are not happy with what they consider to be a predictable outcome.
