Summer is just around the corner and there's no better way to get yourself in the mood than watching a fun, beachy surf movie. Dana (played by Jackson) plays a killer surfer from California who travels to the stunning coast of South Africa to fulfill her dream of surfing in the legendary Jeffrey Bay. With the help of a large group of friends, she is about to embark on an unforgettable surfing odyssey, during which she is watched by a "fun-loving group" of surfing fanatics.
Had this been the original Blue Crush, made famous by Kate Bosworth, the story would have been very different. Instead, she gets on a plane to South Africa, where the waves are high, production costs low - and she follows in her mother's footsteps. Dana fulfills her dream of surfing in J - Bay on the barrels of killer waves, but is watched from behind by an incongruous band of surf fans.
There she meets a similarly surfing Zulu girl named Pushy, who introduces her to a group of beach squatters who lead a hippie life and seem to want nothing for themselves. The charm of Blue Crush 2 lies in the fact that everyone is basically decent, including Dana, her friends and the other surfers in J-Bay. I suspect that the film's direct sequel could go down in history as one of the worst films of all time, for the twins and teen girls it seems to be targeting. In another film, a squatter who calls himself a family would have had worse consequences.
What this film may not have for you is probably the same for viewers who reach an age at which things matter to them. It's a mix of boy rivalries, travel and adventure that some of them may like, but what will probably matter is that it's about a privileged white American girl who goes to Africa to find her soul. Pushy actually tells her that Uhambo's journey is about personal significance, and it is. This is a film for girls who want to look the way they want to look and are free, even if it may seem exotic.
Visit Pushy's Township, visit Africa and show everyone that white girls can dance. Visit her township and leave her white mother, who is in the same place, and then set off again to visit her mother's hometown.
Blue Crush may have been handled inelegantly, but it was born out of a desire to show how great it is for a rich white American girl to visit South Africa and randomly surf. From the filmmakers behind Blue Crush comes an exciting adventure with a great cast of characters, a brilliant script and a fantastic soundtrack.

I loved the film from the beginning, even though I had just read the script and actually had almost two hours. I wish there was such a thing as an end to the story that would end, but no such luck.
