One of the most rousing crowd pullers to come out this Christmas season is also one of its most devastating sadness, as confirmed by the recent release of Alan Turing, the film's central hero. On the one hand it's the story of a Briton who cracked Nazi Germany's Enigma code, and on the other it's the tragic circumstances that befell Alan "Turing" Turing (the central heroes of the film), who brought victory to the Allies by inventing a revolutionary machine that would create a computer age.
Turing, a confined genius who saved countless lives during a greatly shortened war, was imprisoned and castrated, adorned with a chest full of medals. He was later publicly vilified and cruelly punished for his homosexual activities, which were punishable in England until he committed suicide in 1954.
Although his identity was kept secret for 50 years, few knew the extent of his wartime achievements until he was awarded a Order of the British Empire in 1945 for his services. He was pardoned by Queen Elizabeth in 1953, though the case came too little and too late.
It was probably the intention of scriptwriter Graham Moore to turn this puzzle into a film about his solution. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the lead role in the film (and is a bit of a hero himself), reads very hard at first. The worst part is that the parts are put together in such a way that they confuse both the audience and the actors.
The broken story begins with a mystery from 1951, when a detective investigates a burglary at Turing's house in which, strangely enough, nothing is stolen. Eventually, the plot flashes back to 1928, and a child prodigy who is brutally bullied falls madly in love with another classmate named Christopher.
Alexandre Desplats haunting score further heightens the tension and captures the seriousness of the situation. Norwegian director Morten Tyldum delivers a series of monologues to explain what is at stake and escalates as each mission is played out. The Imitation Game is the most focused game when it is primarily limited to being a sequel to Revenge of Nerds, which began in 1939 and introduced a battlefield spirit based on superior intellect, not bombs, to defeat the enemy.
