Story: These were the difficult 1930 "s, when robbers attacked banks and other wealthy targets with alarming frequency, but none was as dangerous as John Dillinger, who traded with gangs with a cunning efficiency that left ordinary citizens alone. While Dillinger became a folk hero, FBI chief J. Edger Hoover was determined to stop his colleagues by ordering agent Melvin Purvis to hunt him down. As PurVIS grappled with the reality of manhunt, Dilllinger himself faced an ominous future, as opportunities dwindled, the world changed, and organized crime flourished.

John Dillinger once said, according to the New York Times, "I'm going to rob banks, and I'd rather not have to do it myself."
It is a simple truth: on the day he escaped from prison, he robbed a bank and lied about it until he died in an alley.
Dillinger was not a nice man, and Michael Mann's Public Enemies accepts this stark fact and resists the temptation to soften it. This is a film that shrugs off, but not in a good way, the way lawless people have been made a myth.
He liked sex, he robbed bankers, but that is not in our interest here; the money is in the bank and we let customers keep their own money.
He could have been a very good military leader, but he didn't rant and rave like a gang member. Johnny Depp and Michael Mann show they don't know everything about Dillinger, and that's a business with reporters and law enforcement.
Me '. I just think about what they did to him and I'd rather not think about it, but I just see him as public enemy number one in the history books.
Here is an efficient, disciplined, courageous, violent man driven by constraints that the film wisely refuses to explain. He loved his gang members because they made money, he loved himself because he was planning his next job, and he had an exit strategy and a retirement plan.
He had no real adult experience in prison, so I'm not really interested in the film, but he had some real adult experience outside of prison. He saw a woman he liked, Billie Frechette, played by Marion Cotillard, and courted her like Dillinger. That is, he took her for a night, had sex with her, bought her a fur coat (as we all know from the film) and saw her again the next day.
She was a girl, and there was no vow to be there and protect her, but there were vows to be there to protect him, so he had to obey.
It's a very disciplined film, but I particularly like the way Dillinger and Billie are presented. It is hard to believe that a film about the most famous outlaw of the 1930s would be shot with clichés, stars, chemistry, script and structure. The only vulnerability he shows in the film is a tiny smile that allows him to give her his coat.
The couple is never a couple, but he needs to be protected because he is so vulnerable, and she needs someone to protect him from his affirmed invincibility.
He hates the system by which he means the banks holding the money, the prisons, the people being held and the police standing in his way. They probably hate the government, but don't think big or the bastard won't win.
The film, based on Bryan Burrough's book, is well researched, and there are extraordinary, seemingly factual sequences in which Dillinger enters the Chicago Police Department's "Dillinger Bureau" and walks through the area. I'm captivated by the portrayal of the police and the city police, and it's one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie.
Depp looks a lot like Depp, and I even went to the trouble of discovering Dillinger's speaking style, but I'm not sure he's the same person or not.
Depp wears clothes similar to those worn by the bank robber, and they filmed him in the same room as Dillinger. Man shot at scene at Crown Point jail, but Depp was dressed like him It was filmed in a different room from Dillinger's, with different lighting and lighting effects.
As a director, I don't indulge in the beauty of the shot without showing artistic direction, but I admire the details. Mann redesigned Lincoln Avenue on both sides of the Biographer Theater and laid tram tracks, and I lived a few blocks away. I will see more and marvel at all these details and many other things about the film.
