Act of Valor (2012) Trailer
In the introduction, director and co-producer Mike O'Brien speaks directly to the audience and describes how he was involved in the films Navy SEALs, how they were embedded in a real SEAL unit and how, when the project became a feature film, he decided to use real seals and not professional actors. An earlier version of this film, reports Rebecca Keegan of the Los Angeles Times, was intended differently as a training and recruitment film. It was shot at the same time as the real SEAL training program, but turned out to be less convincing. The story in this film was far from convincing; it was about the liberation of kidnapped CIA agent Roselyn Sanchez and the smuggling of terrorists into the United States through a tunnel built by a drug cartel in Mexico.
The story seemed realistic, but how could we know anything about the real SEALs and their training, education, and recruitment process?
The main characters were played by real Navy SEALs, who were apparently on active duty during the shooting and were still on duty. I remember the compelling and authentic story told by actors Oliver Stone, Robert De Niro and Robert Downey Jr. and director David Fincher. They have produced a successful and compelling action film, but I'm more interested in the story behind the characters.
This makes it difficult for me to write the usual kind of review, because none of the real names of the characters are revealed, and in fact some of them seem to have no names at all. I read that they are called "Chief Dave" and "Lt. Rorke," but on the official cast list are both Chief Dave and Lt. Rorkes. I limit myself to describing the experience, not the achievements. There is no official casting list, but I read that these two characters are called "Chief Dave" and "Lieutenant." He is played by a real Navy SEAL whose real first name is "Dave" Rorske, according to his Facebook page.
Much of the film consists of pure action, punctuated by short dialogues and some subtleties. The characters do not speak in colorful dialogues, and we do not get to know them as individuals, even if they have personality traits or background stories. Assuming that the characters described as "seals" are played by real seals, I can only say that they are convincing, but require a certain dramatic elongation, which they did not manage to do. In another film I would have found it much easier to describe the events, not the people, but in this film I did not.
Still, the film can be discussed at some level, and there's no doubt that this is a real man, Marine Sgt. In the same week that I saw Act of Valor, I also saw an extraordinary film called Hell's Back. It is a very good film, but not as good as the one I started with and which I can discuss on another level.
In combat in Afghanistan, Harris leads the men in a battle against the Taliban and the U.S. Army's Special Operations Forces.
When he was a teenager, Nathan Harris said, "All I wanted to do was kill people," but when he joined the Marines at the age of 18, he didn't. On the morning of his planned end, a sniper bullet penetrated his right buttocks, shattered his hip cavity and bounced off his leg, shattering the leg bone. He could show people the scar at his entrance and describe how he had two bars that filled his bones.
The film follows Harris home after an agonising period of rehab, and shows that his life will never be the same. Hell! Back Again mixes actual sights and scenes from Afghanistan with scenes at home in North Carolina, and director Dana Dennis, who was embedded in Harris's Echo Company, follows him through the action. Memories of the battle haunt him, but the film's most poignant scenes show him debating with interpreters and answering questions about whether he wanted to be left alone by the Americans or the Taliban. Harris doesn't really say whether he killed anyone or not - he genuinely believes he helped bring about freedom - but we're seeing him grow into a natural leader of people.
He does not have post-traumatic stress syndrome, but he dreams of becoming active again, and he finds it hard to accept that it might not happen.
The action scenes are harrowing and thrilling, and it's a recruitment film, but that's how it all plays out. Once upon a time, it was supposed to be a film about a group of young men in the midst of war, not a recruitment campaign for the military.
At the end there will be a military funeral in honour of three generations of warriors and a memorial service for the young men and their families.
It doesn't look like an action movie and I can't remember seeing a single Taliban fighter, but Harris got injured late on his tour. His men were killed in the field on the first day, and he and his men killed another man on the second day.
I have no doubt teenagers like Nathan Harris who want to kill people would love Act of Valor. Nobody sees the sniper as a sniper, but he's a good guy and I'm sure he would love it if he did.
Directors McCoy and Waugh attached great importance to the use of live ammunition in their film, but they also used live ammunition in "Hell's Back." My best guess is that he's a fucking idiot, and his life, if he describes it today, doesn't look like a recruitment movie.
