The marketing challenge will be to lure mainstream audiences to a dark drama starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman that also has a puzzling title. Castle Rock has tapped into a niche market of young adults with a strong sense of humor, but Shawshank Redemption is also appealing to a more mature audience, though it seems unlikely to hold up to that level.
Shawshank focuses on Maine banker Andy Dufresne (Robbins), who is sentenced to two life sentences for murdering his wife and lover. The film opens with the arrest of the two men found guilty of murdering the wife of one of Robbins "co-conspirators, a former employee of a New York City bank.
Despite repeated pleas of innocence, the court sentenced them to life imprisonment for the murder of their co-conspirator. Andy begins to impress and surprise many of the inmates of the prison when he arrives in Shawshank. One of those surprises is smuggler Ellis (Red Redding), the son of a former Dufresne employee.
The screenplay is by Frank Darabont and is based on the novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs.
Normally at this stage of a review I would talk about what I didn't like about Shawshank Redemption. To be honest, there's not much I can do, but in this case I didn't.
As we all know, Shawshank Redemption is number one on the list of the best horror films of all time. Don't get me wrong, I think they're all spectacular, but a comparison is a very different article. Personally, I would say that it's probably not the "best" film at the time, and I don't think it is. Although it also has incredible acting and dialogue, I also find the fact that it's based on a Stephen King story super exciting.
The two actors in this film, Robin Williams and Robert De Niro, are incredible throughout the film. The two characters become ever closer as friends, and they manage to make the films seem so credible.
It also teaches what it means to be trapped in a cell building with a load of criminals, with Andy and Red demonstrating how to create their own freedom. It makes you feel like you're sitting in the middle of the prison yard, on a bench, and that's what makes you feel like you can't be free.
Frank Darabont, the film's writer and director, seems to have a penchant for emotional prison movies after making his first feature film, "Blue Velvet," shortly before his release. Against a Background is a compelling work by director and screenwriter Frank Dar Abont, who adapted Stephen King's novel of the same name, first published in Different Seasons, into his first feature film. While the lead role follows the story of Andy Dufresne, it's Morgan Freeman as Red who is nominated for an Oscar for best actor this year.
Hardly any other modern film has captured the power of the human spirit as well as "The Redemption of Schalksmühl." The popular film is backed by a number of impressive characters, each of whom has been sentenced to a different type of prison term for their crimes. There are those who resemble the characters in Stephen King's novel and even the film itself, as well as the actors in the film.
The film, which was originally released in 1994, was a success when it was introduced to the general public under the direction of Frank Darabont, starring Morgan Freeman as Ellis Boyd Redding and Dufresne Cooper as William Schalksmuhl. The Shawshank Redemption was received positively by critics, but largely ignored by the public and even by some film critics and film visitors alike, especially when the "Shawshanks Redemption" was released on October 14, 1994. Since then, however, it has become a rapidly growing cult classic and is one of the most popular films in film and television history.
I'm a huge Stephen King fan, and even I loved the story, but I couldn't get anyone to see the film except myself and myself. I am a big fan of the novel on which the film is based, "The Redemption of Schalksmühl," and I am even more a fan than I was of his other novels.
As with any classic film, it's hard to tell where to attribute success, but this one was successful because it transformed what was written on the page into what works best in cinematic terms, which is, after all, the right way to adapt literature.
Tim Robbins (Short Cuts, Tapeheads) plays Andy Dufresne, a man who is found guilty of murdering his wife and her lover shortly after discovering their infidelity. He is sentenced to two life sentences, but Andy is more than just a human being, you cannot kill him. After his conviction, he will be extradited to spend the rest of the day in a prison cell dreaming of his dreams.
