Greyhound (2020) Trailer
The Dark Knight Rises, Tom Hanks continues his run of intense Aaron Schneider films that barely play out in the HBO series he produces. Fans of war movies will be drawn to this one, which, despite its tendency to skip the end credits and employ shouted orders, is not drawn in the same way as the other two films.
Hanks also wrote the movie all you have to know about Commander Ernest Krause is for he made service in World War II as a Navy officer in the U.S. Navy. Hanks, the actor, finds ways to inject subtle glimmers of doubt and fear into the otherwise bland and predictable story of a man with a deep sense of duty and a sense of the importance of his mission. It is one of the most purposeful war films ever made, even if little is offered about the events at sea that justify its existence. On the one hand, in an era of bloated blockbusters, this direct approach is admirable, but on the other hand it's so far from the norm that it is almost refreshing. However, Schneider cannot figure out how to elevate the minimal intention, and Greyhound begins to get numb to their tactics, which feel more shallow and lean because of the movie simplicity.
That's the difference between "Greyhound" and "The Great Escape," a film with a much more ambitious plot and a more complex cast.
Hank plays a career officer who takes command of the destroyer USS Keeling (call sign is Greyhound), which leads a convoy of 37 Allied ships across the Atlantic in early 1942. WWII historians know this section of history as the Battle of the Atlantic, a battle of attrition and the most important battle in the history of World War II, spanning the entire war. But, while Hollywood has produced a bunch of movies about World War II and what happened in the Atlantic Ocean, less has been seen in terms of what truly conveyed the tension from destroyers ride German submarines, which is relatively new.
Maybe it was because of it that director Hank Hanks, in adapting the C.S. Forester's Good Shepherd, was drawn to the idea of he can finally do so in a way which felt genuine. And clearly, that last word is what drives the focus of Hanks and Schneider's approach : the last words.
That consists of Krause shouting at the other things that will play out in the film's final moments, such as the final scene of the movie, and the end credits. The details are clearly what drive "Greyhound," but it's the kind of film that sees orders skipped in the screenwriting and editing, and almost all of them are in fact repeated throughout Krause's chain of command. The historic accuracy of "Greyhound" makes it entertaining, but it is also a film on the filmmaking which sometimes feels more like a lesson than entertainment.
Schneider relies too heavily on its score to make the stakes, and the naval battles are visually interesting enough, given how much weight they carry. The movie repetitive nature can make it feel distant, but it is refreshing for Hanks and Schneider to avoid jingoism. At a theater with the proper sound system, Greyhound may have been more immersive, but at a movie theater, it is a little of a slog, suffering through a few minutes of shuffling on an Apple TV. Greyhorse is a film which seems destined to be shuffled through on a shuffle on your AppleTV and then back on your computer.
Much has been made of Tom Hanks 'jokingly being America's Dad, and his role in the film's plot, but he's not the only one with a bad taste in his mouth.
He knows more about American history than most teachers, and he doesn't behave like it, he even yells at people for wearing a mask. I certainly feel for people who don't want anything overly complicated or nuanced about their dad or a certain generation in their story of heroism. What makes them so different from the rest of us, and what makes the story so much more interesting? There's someone who would never call himself a hero, but he most certainly is one of those who protect his convoy. That's when the naval orders were done, and the human element of Krause's mission came to cheer them to life and nearly save the film.
He sells every beat, and not only with graceful beauty, but he does it with a sense of humor, a touch of wit, an understanding of the history on which the project is based, the entire reason it exists. For years now Hanks has reminded us of the hero who doesn't wear a cape and almost never calls himself a hero. For those of us at a time when we feel like we could use a bit more heroism, this is a comforting reminder. It will probably make you want to call your dad, or at least call him, your mom, and maybe even your brother, but not your sister.
