The performance is not pushed too much, but fits the material, respects the passion of the beginning, the feelings of both ends. There is even a moment when the young Noah Allie says: "I don't see how this works," and he means it, at a time when allies are engaged to a man.
Allie, a rich kid in his late 20s who is sitting on the family estate in North Carolina this summer, and Noah, the son of a wealthy businessman. She's a local kid who works in a sawmill and she's smart and poetic, but she's also a bit of a jerk, a bit too much asshole. His father Sam Shepard is centered and supportive, but he's also a bit of a jerker and his mother a bit more of an asshole. He hangs out at the bar with a group of friends who are all ready to go with him, and he loves every moment he sees of them.
Her parents are straight and she is a trash, but she still loves her parents even though she doesn't really like them. One day, Allie's mother Joan Allen showed her a photo of a local worker who looks hard - accustomed to life - and told her that 25 years ago she was like him, a hard-working man. Allie believes her parents didn't love each other, but her mother insists they did, and Allen is still so passionate about her character that she is able to bring a gentle note of regret to the scene. But it's up to the director to help us move through this soap opera towards truth.
For a film with harder, edgier material, Ryan Gosling identifies his personal connection to the film stuff, and he's a great actor. Rachel McAdams, who was the star of "The Hunger Games" a few months ago and a member of the "American Hustle" cast, shows us once again how well the material blesses the actors. She is completely relaxed, never strives for effect or wants to be sure that one understands the message, but is in the right place at the wrong time.
Garner is so good at making the difficult look easy that he loses credit for his skills, but the rest of the cast don't. Rowlands, best known for his lofty or even manic characters in films like Rowlands, finds a quiet vulnerability here that shines. Robert Fraisse's photography is impressive, from the run-down villas of the city's wealthiest neighborhoods to the quiet, peaceful streets of New York City.
But the story certainly seems a bit too realistic for its time, and the use of the word "fairy tale" in the title makes it seem more idealized. He is convinced that if Allie fulfils his promise to rebuild the old estate for her, he will live there with him and make a studio with her. There is a kind of romance in the story, underscored by the older property. The engagement to marry discourages the young man not from the desire to live his own life, but rather from the desire to be with his wife.
His wife, a former secretary to the President of the United States, had been suffering from Alzheimer's since Ronald Reagan's death. The daughter of former President Patti Davis said that shortly before his death he opened his eyes and stared at Nancy constantly and there was no doubt that he recognized her.
It's nice to think that, but it's also a bit of a sad day for the nation and a bit sad for Nancy Davis and her family. I think you can open the window again before closing it forever, and then again, again and again.
