Review

Directed by veteran Pixar animator Adrian Molina, who draws heavily on Mexican folklore and traditional designs, Coco has a cast of talented young actors, a talented director and an amazing cast. Coco is the story of a little boy who wants to be a musician and a talking skeleton with a heart of gold. From staging great action sequences to providing new plot information every few minutes, the film is all about feeling. It builds up so quickly to an emotionally overwhelming moment that I was surprised to have to wipe away tears in a sneak attack playbook the studio has used for decades.

He lives in the small town of Santa Cecilia and is a kind-hearted child who loves to play the guitar and idolises his great-grandfather, who was killed when a huge church bell fell on his head. Miguel is fighting his family who, since the departure of Miguel's great-grandfather, have banned musical performances and abandoned his loved ones in order to pursue his dream of fame selfishly.

One of the most fascinating things about the film is that it builds its plot around the living and dead members of Miguel's family to determine what his great-grandfather's disappearance means for the extended clan. The family legacy expressed in stories and songs is a deep concern of Coco, or at least it is the official story passed down through generations. Coco has a mysterious element, and whether the hero has entered Alice in Wonderland on his journey to the land of the dead from the grave of his ancestors will be questioned in the course of the film. Both the title character and the heroes "great-grandmother, Renee and Victor, are traumatized by their father's disappearance.

He becomes an almost mute presence as he sits in the corner staring out the window, hypnotized by a sweet old movie rolling on in his head.

The machinations that bring Miguel to the other side are too complicated in this review, although they are understandable when you see the film. Suffice it to say that Miguel arrives as a melancholy goofball named Hector (Gael Garcia Bernal), uses skeletal face painting and poses as one of the dead, and that while Marty McFly, who returns in 1950 to ensure that his mother ends up with his father in the future, Miguel, if he stays on the other side, will be dead.

I hesitate to go into too much detail about the plot of the film because some of it seems obvious in hindsight and others, like Matthew McConaughey's portrayal as Marty McFly, seem attractive and inevitable. The use of photos is a great example of how to tell a story through pictures, more precisely through pictures. Someone's face is torn off, there's a guitar (which later turns out to be important), and many are conveyed through stolen family photos that Miguel brings with him to the land of the dead. This is because Miguel is deprived of any visual information, revealing and restoring the need to complete and correct the incomplete and distorted images of these images.
COCO in Mexico this month, it is already the highest-grossing film of all time, but the tone and perspective of the film are fresh. I'm starting to wonder if this is just an alternative Pixar universe that's been around as long as others.

I particularly like the dancing skeletons that keep popping up in the cartoon shorts from the 1930s. The cast of the film reads like a Latin talent, and to my surprise, the ensemble includes the playwright Octavio Solis, who was one of my high school teachers in Dallas. Like most Pixar productions, this one is full of characters with many different backgrounds, but none is as familiar to me as COCO.
Also noteworthy is the widescreen composition of the film, which places many characters in the same frame. From the dead interacting with the living, to a silly spectacled dog named Dante (modelled on the Mexican national dog Xoloitzcuintli), to the flying dragon, there is a whiff of Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki in every scene.

This approach makes you feel like you're watching a recording of things that are actually happening, and makes Coco seem gentle and humble, even though she's the shrillest and loudest of all the movies. The direction lets you appreciate how the characters interact with each other and with their surroundings, and lets you decide what you want to see. I can't remember if there are a few little jokes in Coco, but when you see them, you have them. This film is a classic, even if at first glance it seems a bit too much like a modern version of an old-school horror movie.
