Review

I was depressed to be back at school and didn't know I had a movie that I was looking forward to tonight before going back to work, but here's the movie that made Tuesday seem worthwhile. Carlos directed, wrote, also wrote the camera, composed the score, did sound design and VFX work; Lindsay Goranson did all that; Carlos also wrote the script and the music, and he also composed and composed a score. All this hard work was seen in the first trailer for Retina, which came out of Screen Media Films.

Check out the trailer for the sounddesign of the film, which Ferrer himself may have designed. However, it leads to a look that respects the original, openly natural look of the films, but perhaps realizes that films by E.T. Vintage do not perform as well as they used to, especially when you start introducing image problems.

I enjoyed the daylight, and what often seemed to be the scene's only source of light shone brighter.
A one-man film that takes possession, Ferrer is an obsessive scholar who, at least in certain circles, has redefined the collaborative nature of filmmaking. Nevertheless, I was able to witness the light and intensity in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (reviewed here) and its post-9 / 11 live-action sequel. It was all done on two Mac pros with special effects and other software packages.

The walls are always the walls, and every director works with a different team, but they are always in the same room, in a room with exactly the same equipment.

The Statue of Liberty disintegrates into an eerily choreographed ballet that looks like it has cost about $200,000 raised by Ferrer's friends, family and investors. The building is crumbling, but it was shot for about $500,000 and is powered by a cadre of skilled, multitasking independent filmmakers who are shrinking their budgets and expanding the dimensions of polished, visceral films to a point where they would have been impossible a decade ago.

As production technology improves, it gives independent filmmakers the opportunity to be creative and appeal to a specific audience. There are gruelling sci-fi, disturbing images, retina-popping CGI and even a cameo by Ben Affleck in the film's opening scene.

Life is Denisa's personal stamp on sci-fi, and the crew realize they are on a suicide mission. Even with Binoche in the lead role, this is a more sophisticated, deeper and chaotic version of the romcom, but like last year, let the sun in. The expedition harnesses the power of a black hole, so it is clear from the outset that it will be a matter of life - or death.

Denis heightens the tense mood with slow passages in which seemingly nothing happens, punctuated by moments of bloody violence and harrowing intensity. Two deleted scenes kick off, another adds Elliott and E.T. downtime in a bathroom - based on a sequence, and one adds more of the same, but with a slightly different tone and a bit more action.

The E.T. Journal, meanwhile, is a mammoth 54-minute documentary that consists entirely of behind-the-scenes scenes scenes scenes shot on set in 1981. Much more substantial and rewarding is the relatively new 12-minute feature in which Spielberg is asked about the making of the film.
In addition to writing, directing and starring, Carruth also filmed, edited and filmed the soundtrack for the film. Much of the puzzle is pieced together through interviews with Spielberg, Spielberg's son Steven Spielberg Jr. and other E.T. producers and directors.

Speaking of the latter, there is only one way to describe it, and that is that it sometimes looks ridiculous. It's not about what happens in front of the camera, it's about the characters and their reactions to what's happening around them.

The last chapter contains one of the most ridiculous action sequences I've ever seen in a movie, and I'm not just talking about the main action scenes, which are an action sequence cut into a million parts so often that it's almost impossible to figure out what's going on.

The climax of Retina is even shorter - clever and somewhat crude and even exploitative, which comes as no surprise to the New York-based filmmakers. Fortunately, I didn't see the film in 3D, but I could only imagine what the retina - the experience - could be like. I remained intrigued, waiting and waiting until I landed on the "retina" and found out where it was going, so I could have waited and waited.

This is clearly the work of a dedicated filmmaker working with minimal resources, and director Ferrar is someone who has seen many great films by the likes of David Cronenberg, Robert De Niro, David Lynch and others.
