Peter Rabbit (2018) Trailer
In this short cartoon, in which Bugs torments Bunny and Elmer Fudd, Peter Rabbit behaves in the midst of their torments. Wearing a red and white striped shirt, black trousers and a black hat, he risks life and limb to steal products from McGregor's garden.
The adventure is the subject of Peter Rabbit and the Winkles, a popular children's book series from the late 19th century. The story of Peter Rabbit, first published in 1902, remains a popular bedtime read as the headstrong hero suffers the consequences of his misconduct.
This might explain why, in this 3-D animated film, live-action actors interact with digital creatures in the same way as real animals. Reactions range from bewilderment to sheer horror as Peter (noisily played by James Corden, who made a huge effort to retract his hips) and his menagerie drawn by Potter's own side are portrayed as rowdy vandals who transform the McGregor estate in a picturesque Lake District into a real animal house, only to devastate the place with a hedgehog using an arrow and a blurry tail. Nevertheless, delicately nuanced watercolour portraits of Peter and the Winkles hang on the walls of the house.
Best Very Bad Day remains reasonably faithful to the source, at least for the first 10 minutes or so. After all, it's a relatively short book, surpassed by one of the most popular children's books of all time, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
In this padded version, the now orphaned Peter has recruited his triplets Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotontail (sung by John Debicki and his son Peter Jr.), who do not appear in the book but help stage a major heist. Since it looks as if the gardener has caught his prey, he falls in love with Peter's triplets, who are, one might say, three times the size of his own son. Gardeners Sam (John Cusack) and Sam's older brother Jack are clueless and turn their backs on Peter and the other three.
Peter will also have to compete with an excited Londoner who inherits the house and a girl he has a crush on. The strange blend of species is reminiscent of Rushmore, with the help of Rose Byrne, who adds honey to the English brew and is underused. I was nervous when I learned that Domhnall Gleeson was starring, but he tends to paint a picture. He understands the food needs of the rabbits and knows that Peter will have a lot of problems with his new triplets, especially Flopsy and Mopsy.
Having watched A.A. Milne exploit his son ever since, I have a feeling I have always liked Winnie the Pooh since Goodbye Christopher Robin. While Thomas hides the animal world from Bea and develops from a likeable cheeky chap into a mocking sadist who tries to torture his enemies by turning them into weapons of time and escalating the destruction, it is Thomas who begins to regret it and shares his love for his family and his new home.
The picturesque production values are of the highest quality and the animated similarities between Peter and his pals are credible. There is a doodle and a rooster constantly smacking around, which I experience every day, and I am forced to repeat the jokes.
The slapstick antics are laughed out loud by many of the small children in the crowd, and a few times Peter Benjamin (in a brown jacket) is mocked for being too big for his jacket. Then there is the scene of a deer paralysed in its own lane and blindly staring at its headlights, which is also worthy of a double play.
This is clearly one of the best films in the animation franchise and a great example of Peter finally doing the right thing and making peace with the people.
A slight chuckle is no substitute for genuine charm, and Corden doesn't insist on doing rabbit karaoke, but he's still one of the funniest characters on the show.
