He’s Roy, he shoots his way out of trouble and tells her she’s in danger. She’s home the next day, miraculously, when agents pick her up; Roy saves her again, and a transcontinental chase ensues with Roy convincing her that he’s the good guy, protecting an energy source that a rogue agent wants to sell on the black market. Can she trust Roy, and will trust matter when the bullets start flying?
Knight and Day 2010 Trailer
We talked recently about the tricky terrain that is action - romantic comedy, and this vehicle was poised to be a pile of failed attempts. But the dynamic duo pulled through and delivered an absolutely hilarious summer blockbuster.
At one point it felt as if they were trying to capture the same chemistry that Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn had created in Charade. Cruise plays a vaguely mysterious hero who should be looking for more in movies like this one, throwing more punches than monologues. But on the other hand, the film has a lightweight story that offers enough intrigue to keep interest going. There are many great action sequences, all connected by fast-moving set pieces.
What we have in Knight and Day are some pretty people running around, dodging bullets and crashing cars, but that's the point.
In a chewing-gum way, I enjoyed the first two and a half hours of Knight and Day's play, but not the rest.
There are some great scenes and one - lines, but they are too few and far apart, and they behave too many, far too short. The rest of the script was written by writer Patrick O'Neil, who promised himself to make it happen by filling in some of the things that are taken for granted in films such as the Charlie's Angels series. In a way, it feels like a forced prequel to a successful romantic spy film with two actors who have burned themselves out to get the audience excited about it. Diaz comes across as too desperate a single woman, which works fine at first, but puts her on the back burner in an attempt to incorporate her into the story.
Knight and Day is willing to waste time on lessons given to the supporting players, but even those who don't have a lot of work are learning the hard way. The supporting characters in the film, such as Diaz and Diaz's ex-wife, help raise him in the film.
Of course, the film strives to achieve that goal, leading to some great moments, such as the fight between Diaz and Diaz's ex-wife.
While Diaz delivers his typically offbeat comedy, the script is tailored to each person's strengths and limited reach, while Cruise does a great job as Shadow - as the day's hero, Roy June, who tries to dodge villains and double agents at every turn. Beyond explosions and swimwear, there's plenty to see - popping action and everything else that goes on in Knight and Day.
You only get to see fragments of what happens when you wake up gloomy - eyes, just to wake up and see how something happens while you're dozing again. But what sets Knight and Day apart from the crowd is the sheer amount of action that only Tom Cruise can pull off.
If the inelegant contraptions were able to use a barrage of bullets and sudden power cuts to shorten the action, they instead provide the required eyebrows. The locations change all the time, while striving to add a certain amount of wit, romance and glamour to a revised agent thriller template. But don't worry when it comes to making this a hilarious, fast-paced action ride. Roy Miller has it all, and it looks like we love it more than he does.
Fittingly, the outlook looks best overseas, and Fox's release should attract audiences looking for an escape in midsummer. Cruise has played unbalanced characters before (Magnolia, Collateral, Tropic of Thunder), but the ambiguity about whether he's in control spills over into the plot as the body count soars to alarming heights. Roy remains sociopathically calm even as bullets fly and SUVs whizz down the highway.
This may help to figure out why these strangers approach each other, but ultimately it's a failure of the script rather than the performance.
Directed by James Mangold, Knight and Day lets the thief - who catches the thief in a walking snake - consist of bad guys and good guys, but the filmmakers place the greatest emphasis on whether the audience is enchanted by a government agent who may or may not have been a rogue, or by a tomboy vintage car restorer who becomes a kidnapping victim. This includes the film's main villain, a man with a history of violence and a penchant for violence against women and children.
None of this makes sense, but the strategy here is that the film's tongue-in-cheek lightness is contagious enough to overlook these contradictions. In this disorienting series of events, we race through the streets of New York City, chasing shadows, agents in dark suits and cars, and into the city center.
