Story:
Los Angeles and other cities around the world are being bombarded by meteors that seem to be slowing down once they hit the earth’s atmosphere. The earth is suddenly being invaded by space aliens that have landed off the shore of LA, and who begin killing everybody along the beach. The military is ordered into action. Marine Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), who was about to retire, is reassigned to a new platoon. The platoon, flown by chopper to the forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport, is being led by a new 2nd Lt. Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez). They are sent on a mission to rescue some civilians who are trapped at the police station within alien territory. They only have 3 hours to complete their mission and get out before the Air Force bombs that zone.
Battle Los Angeles (2011) Trailer
Here is a science fiction film that insults the word 'science fiction' with a hyphen, and I want to cut off my fingernails to clean them. The production reflects the appalling cynicism of the makers, who have not even attempted to create anything more than pointless chaos.
The meteor must have veered off course and plunged into the ocean, but no reason is given as to why, other than that it was intended to dilute. It shows a scene of extraterrestrial troops marching with their weapons of war on a beach and ready to attack humanity.
It's not entirely clear how crucial the action in Santa Monica is, but apparently it is. The aliens seem to have been defeated and the special effects for the raid are in the form of a helicopter flight over SantaMonica. It appears to be the first time in over a decade that they have flown over the city of Los Angeles.
The other aliens can be seen in a long shot looking like stick figures being whipped up by a budding animator. It seems to be an animal-machine hybrid whose arms allow automatic weapons to grow and who must have made it difficult to change babies. As the Marines scratch at the aliens with their battle knives, they find pus - filled pus. Staff Sgt. (played by Aaron Eckhart) and his marines fight against a group of aliens.
Eckhart is perfectly cast and a damn great action hero, but he's also a good actor. There is no doubt that no one's acting skills are required in this film, and Eckhart is a great example of that. But he's not the only one, because Nantz, a 20-year veteran, has something dodgy that keeps being referred to, though screenwriter Christopher Bertolini hesitates to describe it directly.
The dialogue consists almost exclusively of succinct screams, and it is almost always in the form of one - lines from Eckhart's character, without any dialogue at all.
The only character I remember having four sentences in a row is the anchor of cable news, and none of them gets more than a single line of dialogue, even though the platoon includes all ethnic groups, including Latinos, Asians, Nigerian surgeons, and so on, who are all placeholder characters.
It appears to have been put together by the proverbial tornado that swept across the scrapyard. There is a planet on which the design has not yet been discovered (even the Coke bottles must look like pincushions), and there are extraterrestrial battleships we have seen in movies, but no one rises from the earth in front of the frightened marines. These ships are believed to have arrived via a meteor, and they are all in the midst of an epic battle with Earth.
One might wonder how 10 or 12 blocks from Santa Monica lead to the battlefield on Lincoln Boulevard. In a good film you understand where the hero is, where his opponent is and where he is. You understand geometry when the heroes shoot at each other, but nowadays there is a lazy editing in action movies that assumes that visually nothing has to make sense.
When you think of the scene in the middle of the film with Aaron Eckhart and his gun in his hand, you want to tear your hair out and weep bitter tears of despair. There will be a recording of him shouting something, and next to that recording there will be another recording that has nothing to do with this incomprehensible act. In this mess, every shot is filled with nothing that makes sense, no matter how good the camerawork.
Generations of filmmakers have devoted their lives to perfecting a technique unknown to indifferent directors like Jonathan Liebesman. You don't get millions of dollars to produce an attack on a generation's attention span.
When I visit a friend who admires this crap with her, I tell her that she is an idiot, and when she visits her friends who admire him, she tells them that they are idiots. If you like a film as a young woman, tell them what you think of the film and think you should think about the time you spend apart.
