The Red Planet, a 2000 science fiction thriller directed by Antony Hoffman with Robert Downey Jr. as the title character, John Travolta as a scientist and Michael Fassbender as an astronaut.
Earth is in an ecological crisis, and Subrin argues that CO2 from Mars "ice cap could be released to change the atmosphere, allowing astronauts to produce oxygen, food, and water. In the first phase of the planet's terraforming, an automated interplanetary mission is seeding Mars with algae that create an atmosphere and supply it with oxygen and food.
As Plait explains, the title mission of the "Mission to Mars" is a first-crew camp in which subsequent crews bring additional supplies. The two films fade as scientific interest turns to the more pressing question of colonizing Mars. In Mission to Mars, science is imbued with something that should surprise us with the wonder and spectacle of cinema itself.
The film takes place in the year 2025, when humanity has polluted the earth so much that there is no turning back and is looking for a new planet for colonization.
Mars is being bombarded by robots and space probes that carry different strains of biologically produced algae. Earth - Born organisms seem to thrive, and green pastures are spreading across Mars, but they are bombarding Mars with robots, spacecraft, and various types of robots carried by various types of bio-engineering algae, all in search of food.
The Red Planet is a science fiction film that requires a mission to Mars in 2056, and a space mission has launched that sends a team of scientists to investigate some strange things.
The film is based on a play that turned out to be too out - there for a mainstream audience, and the execution is average at best. Tim Burton directed a cult hit with virtually all the cast that was popular in the mid-to-late 1990s after a hilarious Mars invasion. The flick landed at the box office, but it's still one of the most popular films of all time, with a huge cult following.
The Red Planet was not a cinematic masterpiece, but it was one of two Mars-themed films released in 2000. There was also the barely tolerable Saturn 3 that stood on Saturn, and there were also two that were made for Saturn. Doug Trumbull, who made the special effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey, decided to play his next film, Red Planet 2000, on Saturn, just to show that it is possible (see "Green, Green Grass on Earth" in the Space Review of March 2, 2009).
The Pathfinder rover touched down on Viking 1, the first lander on Mars since the end of the Cold War. It and the numerous missions that followed marked the beginning of a new interest in exploring Mars in the United States, so it was only natural that Hollywood took note.
Three years later, the cinemas gave us two very different trips to Mars. The Red Planet followed on November 10, 2000, and three months after its release, it struggled to catch up with its $100 million budget. Although it feels like a completely different plot, the Red Planet looks very much like the mission that appeared at the beginning of the millennium: Mars, but with a different cast of characters and a completely different plot.
The coloring of the Martian surface and the sky is the same, and there are some similarities between the two movies, as the color palette, lighting and light effects are similar, but there is a very different set of characters and a completely different plot.
The precise movements of the spacecraft are also reminiscent of the space waltz that Kubrick performed with Strauss, and Moss's character bears the name Bowman, after Kubrick's protagonist. AMEE has a much more complex plot than Red Planet 2000, but the memory of a much better film serves only to underscore the Red Planet's weaknesses and flaws.
Those of us who want more science fiction will have to wait for a sequel to the project Kubrick left behind, or at least a sequel - until then.
Brian De Palma wasn't the right man - to name just the big budget blockbusters - but that changed after he brought Mission: Impossible to nearly $1 billion at the box office in 1996. While he made several thrillers and a few horror movies, he was no stranger to genre films. Making a big sci-fi adventure is a big deal for Disney, because their films aren't always great, but they're not boring either.
The film's three screenwriters may not be rock stars alike, but they are all equally dependable. The crew consists of Robert Downey Jr., Robby Krieger and Ted Danson, and their joint filmography includes stars like John Travolta, Robert De Palma, David Fincher, Tom Hanks, Chris Hemsworth and rising stars like Michael Keaton, Michael Caine and John Goodman.
