Review

I remember a quote from the comic artist Howard Chaykin: "I consider myself similarly flawed, but I am more real. I admit that I couldn't write a comic book that featured characters I didn't feel fit my life experiences.

But it's this kind of cynicism that makes Battleship Island so exciting, and Ryoo is clearly inspired by the private Ryan who saves the lives of his friends and family members, as well as his own.

In other words, the film's heroes are selfish, but never venal or ugly; their survival instincts are materially observable, their suffering is quantifiable, and they do what they need to do to face the successive challenges they face. This is because they are human, not out of any biological or moral obligation to be human, or even because their sense of altruism and community stems primarily from necessity and terrible danger.

Japanese internment camp on Hashima Island, where the battleship island is located a few months after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The diffuse ensemble drama is largely about gang - and Sohee's relationship with each other and her daughter. Occasionally, however, the drama breaks away from them and focuses on a minor character, further contextualizing the situation they find themselves in.

Women of all ages are herded into comfort houses, where they prostitute themselves to Japanese officials, and pregnancies and venereal diseases are treated as inconveniences that bring shame on the island. Everyone works, but men are usually forced to work in shift tunnels, where he is driven to and from his workplace as a worker in the construction of the battleship. One is even a "Korean collaborator" who acts as a mediator between Japanese soldiers and Korean prisoners.

OK, his bandmates are spared going to Hashima by taking bribes, but the trick quickly backfires and he realises that almost everyone is trying to escape the misery. He was always portrayed as a comically desperate fixer, so I spent much of the first hour of this film wondering why he was the main character. I always sweat when I think of the Japanese and how these circumstances make the bonds human.

The noble things Gang - ok does is to create a better life for the main beneficiary who is himself, not his band mates.

In this sense, Ryoos' film is more of a film about the Battle of the Battleship Island battle than a film about gang - ok, life on the island. The Battleship Island is a gang Ok, because you can see how good it is, While Yoon rallies people with demagoguery - like speeches. In the end, the Japanese are defeated, and Gang O.K. "s story fits neatly into the story of Yoons and his students trying to escape from Hashima Island.

Characters are reduced to their human needs by being able to use the bathroom and find a way to feed themselves. They lick dynamite sticks for extra food and are praised by the emperor, which makes them popular with the prison guards. But they are not heroes, they are just survivors, and there is no point in using the toilets or finding ways to feed them.

Ryoo's emphasis on beatings, explosions and prostitution will test your sometimes-haunting worldview. Sensational displays of violence and cruelty are the norm, making them no less true than the reality of the real world.

Human experience is defined by suffering and perseverance, and it is most striking to see the extras mowing down those who crush you on the intellectual level. Apart from that, Battleship Island is sometimes uncomfortable to watch, but it always captivates the crowd. It makes the canyon dog a little uncomfortable and that makes it all the more interesting.

Just think of the way in which Ryoo uses music as a critical expression of nationalist resistance. Japanese military anthem that the gang - ok band plays to flatter their hostage-takers - records and then plays again and again to flatter their hostages.

I could give you a list of explosive set pieces - pieces that the film would have finished by jazz standards, but my real calling is to play jazz music. Instead, Battleship Island culminates in the aforementioned prison yard Free Fall, staffed by a jazz band composed by Ennio Morricone.

It is a brazen recall that pushes the boundaries of good taste and intellectual credulity and makes perfect emotional sense. Battleship Island is bold, but it's also the rare war film that's as thoughtful as it is bold.
