I remember a quote from the comic artist Howard Chaykin: "I consider myself similarly flawed, but I am more real. I admit that I couldn't write a comic book that featured characters I didn't feel fit my life experiences.
But it's this kind of cynicism that makes Battleship Island so exciting, and Ryoo is clearly inspired by the private Ryan who saves the lives of his friends and family members, as well as his own.
In other words, the film's heroes are selfish, but never venal or ugly; their survival instincts are materially observable, their suffering is quantifiable, and they do what they need to do to face the successive challenges they face. In this sense, Ryoos' film is more of a film about the Battle of the Battleship Island battle than a film about gang - ok, life on the island. The Battleship Island is a gang Ok, because you can see how good it is, While Yoon rallies people with demagoguery - like speeches. In the end, the Japanese are defeated, and Gang O.K. "s story fits neatly into the story of Yoons and his students trying to escape from Hashima Island.

Apart from that, Battleship Island is sometimes uncomfortable to watch, but it always captivates the crowd. It makes the canyon dog a little uncomfortable and that makes it all the more interesting.
Just think of the way in which Ryoo uses music as a critical expression of nationalist resistance. Japanese military anthem that the gang - ok band plays to flatter their hostage-takers - records and then plays again and again to flatter their hostages.
