In summary, you might think that writer / director Leigh Whannell has a lot to say about man's relationship with technology, but you'd be wrong, because his latest film Upgrade (see below) has little to do with the development of the idea that modern technology uses its creators the way its creators use it. The film follows the story of a man (Logan Lerman) whose body and wife are destroyed by upward-moving cyborgs. I had a good time with him, as long as I didn't take Whannyell's half-baked ideas too seriously.
Grey's House is a pseudo-cave, in which his car takes him to and from his house, a futuristic man's cave, the foundation of which consists of concrete, granite, wood and glass, but is also filled with quietly hissing automatic doors and voice control. As soon as she makes it to the back seat, she notices something is going on. Grey and Asha's car was hacked and destroyed in the poor suburb where Grey grew up.
In Upgrade, the rich live a different life, and Grey identifies as an outsider with an assimilating beard that reduces his facial expression to a gaping mouth and bulging Muppet eyes. He works with his hands and his superficial human - even human - moods give him the appearance of a creepy loner whose mood is essentially that of an evil James Dean lookalike.
So Eron Grey offers to help him after the evil cyborgs kill Asha (spoiler) and turn him into a quadriplegic, and he implants a radical computer chip called Stem into Grey's body that helps him control his body in a similar way to what happens at the beginning of the film. The StEM speaks to Grey, commands and even strengthens his control over his body whenever he gives permission.
And, of course, the tribe uses its superhuman abilities to help Grey find his wife's killer and fight the evil cyborgs in the final battle.
It is tempting to compare Grey to a killing machine, but his personality is embedded in his body like a sick, fateful ghost.
He actively encourages Stem to first do whatever it takes to protect their shared body, and then take his own revenge - fueled by investigations. In another scene, he orders Stems to use his body to disarm a group of pub thugs and resident thugs by dragging him through a bullet box of urine in a crowded bathroom, undermining any comment Whannell and his film might have had. He also instructs him to stop twice, but he disagrees, even though his victim has given him all the answers he wants. Gray mercilessly cuts the batsman's face off and gives him a pass to run to.
Taking these scenes seriously, one might conclude that Whannell believed that the technology had finally proven what the military could not, and that torture was good because it was effective. The fact that Grey pauses to think about it would only reinforce this suspicion. Again, the upgrade is not about image, but about action.
Driven by technology and the narrative of revenge, Whannell is at his best in his chase scenes, which include karate chops and literally weapons in people's hands. The murders continue, and mysterious clues are handed out as the grey and suspicious detective Betty Gabriel, who is assigned to her wife's case, comes and goes without much rhyme or reason.
The key to enjoying it is to enjoy it as much as you can, even if it's not the best movie you've ever seen. It may not be capital - a good film, but it can be very entertaining, and that is one of the key qualities of a good film.
