The Target (2014) Trailer
It is a long time since Euro - American critics, for lack of a simpler classification, have taken the extreme, which is a term that describes Target better. Korean helmsman Chang moved the French thriller Point Blank to Korea, in which an ex-hitman is tasked with finding out who has blamed him for the murder of his wife and daughter. The film has some of the best cinematography of any recent film, as well as an excellent use of shooting yourself out of a car accident to save someone if you can ram them directly into a police station.
The level of violence and evil at play has been exposed a few times, but the basic premise that serious criminals work together in a square to fight dirty cops is largely intact. The Target also features the return of the ailing younger brother of one of Chang's favorite characters from Point Blank, as well as several other familiar faces.
In an opening sequence that takes the noir markings to the extreme in the pouring rain, Yeo-hoon is shot by his pursuers, run over by a car, hospitalized, and then shot again by her pursuer. Tae-jun gets into the real story when he first foils an attempt on his life, then receives a phone call ordering him to take his patient to hospital - if not, his pregnant wife dies. This indicates the beginning of the couple's race against time as he tries to clear his name and Tai-jin to save his wife.
The long car chase lasts 36 hours, but it is paused to let the characters and the audience find out where they are going. Following this logic, Chang and helmsman Yoon Seung-hoon ("The Secret Life of Walter Mitty") interrupt the action for a few minutes to pause and explain the whole thing to the characters (and the audience).
If you're a domestic B.O., you'll conquer the fan base of the Western genre with this hyperkinetic work of unfiltered machismo. The target strikes a nerve by inserting a tense chase sequence that takes place on a rainy night. After speeding through the streets of South Korea in the middle of the night in a car full of policemen, the picture starts with the injured protagonist back in his car, only to be hit by another car.
The pace is fast, the threat is palpable, and every shot documents the action, from reflections in puddles on the tarmac to reflections in the rain.
The film remains taut after the opening salvo, and even if the production quickly loses some of its verve, it's a promising tone for those who don't stick to it. The film could have focused more on the plot and not been so boring and worrying, but in terms of its technical aspects, this is not a bad action thriller. With a couple of solid set pieces, the original was a masterclass in genre filmmaking at the start.
Blank points out, however, that the film begins to lose its balance and characterization, and accordingly, it begins to lose steam even before its climax. Although I guess this movie tries different things while staying true to the original version, not many of them work. This is a competent remake, but it is less fast and less efficient compared to its predecessor. It's going pretty well until the
anticipated finale, but it's anything but competent in terms of pace and pace.
Lee Jin-Wook is often hyped up in this film, and his character has little else to do but run along. He could have tried, but I have to confess he looks a bit like a hiccup; I saw several in the audience giggling as he fell into a fit during his one scene. I was reminded of how Tae-Joon's counterpart, played by Gilles Lellouche in Point Blank, was much more active by comparison. In this film, he encounters some dangerous moments and is more of a spectator in many cases, so I'm sure he could have tried.
As expected, the climactic action sequences of this film are decorated with lots of bangs to delight the audience, but they only magnify the implausible aspects of the plot and feel drawn to the end. It wasn't that dull at last night's screening, and it wasn't a total failure; the Target did some good things, including Ryoo Seung - Ryong's strong performance. This film is weaker than the original version because the script was adapted from a screenplay by Lee Jin - Wook, the director of Point Blank, not Lee Joon - wobbled. Considering that there is a slightly better version, I do not think there is any reason to recommend this film now.
Although I cannot comment on the similarities and differences, Target is a good film I have not seen before and one of the best films of its kind in Korea.
