Half arrives at the heart of the growing family of an anxious, broken cousin, a love affair and love in the Kissing Booth. It's clear that Wu is aiming for the same kind of fun as her Cyrano de Bergerac - the stirring plot comes from a novel, but it's not always clear what she's aiming for.
The classic teen movie is that boys and girls share their feelings of love, and most films of this genre could treat their mutual interests as inevitable. But it turns out that the romance between a boy and a girl in their coming - or ageing - years feels more like Paul Munsky's dream than a real-life love story. It's a classic trope, but it feels a little too much like a romantic comedy and not quite the kind of romantic drama he dreamed of.
Inspired by the French play Cyrano de Bergerac, Alice Wu wrote and directed the 2020 Netflix film, which transfers the classic story to the fictional small town of Squahamish. It's a film about a boy and a girl of a coming - or ageing - age, but it's more of a love story than a romantic comedy or drama.
As the story unfolds, however, it becomes clear that love drives the story in a variety of ways, including gender and sexuality. What begins as a harmless transaction ends with a reasonably optimistic redemption - for the trio, which soon turns into a precarious façade that is sometimes emotionally exhausting to observe.
Wu's view of a strange love story is presented in a multi-faceted account that works well thanks to its diverse cast and crew. Although the plot could easily have changed, it is delivered with an ending that takes into account the reality of the situation rather than imposing an image - a perfect ideal. Half is not a coming-of-age love story that should feel monotonous now, but instead feels like a breath of fresh air, and that's because of Wu's unique approach to portraying it.
With a touch of credibility and a great ensemble cast, the film stands out from the long line of cliché flicks. While Wu's script tells a story that sees him as a film for young adults, his sensitivities in filmmaking help differentiate the film from other teen-oriented love movies of the past decade, and he describes Ellie's story in a way that can be associated with any audience. Half will be a film for viewers who particularly relate to Ellie, but also for those who don't.
So, Netflix users who are looking for a new movie won't go wrong with Half, and for those who don't, it's a great movie for everyone.

She enjoyed great success with Susan Johnson's "The Boys" and has since returned to the same subgenre with her latest film, "American Hustle." Much as I love it, Netflix does well to tell its global audience the story of young Americans finding themselves, discovering their own identity and expressing their true feelings.

To pay her father's overdue electricity bill, Ellie agrees to help Paul, a nice - yet simple - footballer (he's actually registered). One of the teenagers begrudgingly helps him with a trick, which is followed by a series of sad, wild and sexy episodes. As the opening narrative quickly warns us, this is not a love story, nor is it a romantic comedy, like Manbebe the Man.
It's clearly not a traditional love story, and although Ellie Chu says "love is chaotic, terrible, selfish and bold," the love story is the only way to sum up the film accurately. Half the films directed by Alice Wu can now be streamed on Netflix, with a certificate of 12.
