Nothing spurs revenge more than being murdered in cold blood, and the latest indie action - horror to lift its leading lady out of her grave - is Kill Joan, starring Jamie Bernadette as the titular victim of a brutal murder by her ex-husband. We have seen the death of Quentin Tarantino - driven revenge stories explored in his smash hit Kill Bill in 2003 and his latest film Quentin, in which he teamed up with director David Fincher to explore the dark side of death in the form of his new film Killing Bill 2.
Joan Butler (Jamie Bernadette) is the eponymous victim of a brutal murder by her ex-husband, and after getting fed up with Brix's services, she decides to play Brix the Bitch (2016). Deja Vu has pushed the boundaries with its over-the-top action horror elements, but is still one of the best horror films of 2016.
Killing Joan begins with Joan's attempt to meet a mob that leads to her own troupe, including Brix, who works for Frank Foster. As Joan works her way through the subordinates responsible for her death, she begins to realize that Frank is more than you think, and that he has similar preternatural abilities aimed at corrupting her soul. A particularly sloppy job is done by a corrupt gangster, Frank's ex-wife, who unwittingly manages to convince her to skip Frank and start a new life.
Jo is a mob enforcer but she is strict, has an attitude and is fair to the people she was picked up from. Her temperament leads her to make mistakes that are not respected by the gang, which leads her to be betrayed by her own gang.
When she is pronounced dead, she returns with a new gift that makes her a force to be reckoned with on her revenge mission. The story is a revenge film that follows a character who wants revenge after being betrayed by the mob. I was a part of it, and I'm a big fan of revenge movies like this because it's such an interesting story.
The opening is a crime action film, but its second half gives us a horror story, and while it's fun to watch, it feels like it's been split in two at times. The location is your normal crime film, and you've left a warehouse to make sure no one sees your business, and once again the film offers a twist on the supernatural element. This, too, is the story we know and where most twists can come and go. So, although the first and second half open the door to stories we don't see coming, they are still interesting.
What angers me the most is that Killing Joan got very CGI - happy when it got the extra budget it found at the end of filming and decided to blow it off. Perhaps the cinematographer has always been a shivering wreck, and the camera never stops shaking, but it is reduced to a squeak that trembles - in the slipstream of a film rather than a real horror film.
Even the fight scenes are not that great, with the attack on Joan being the only one that feels even remotely intense. When asked what it's like to die halfway through the film, the titular Joan replies, "It's not peaceful," and that feeling couldn't be more apt after watching Killing Joan. There are some comments about femininity in the script about how Joan differs markedly from other women in the film, but they are underdeveloped and never get out of the shadows of the film's poor execution.
If the success of Black Panther is any indication, comic books will remain, and Killing Joan has a superhero edge, even if it's not an adaptation of the famous graphic novel. The next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Civil War, comes out in April and is sure to hit you in the stomach.

The Grue Crew airs on Mary Jane (April 20) this week, recalling classic slasher tropes with a Gore style. This week they are hiding the vengeful spirit of an angry assassin and campaigning for the life and death of his wife, Mary Jane. First and foremost is "Killing Joan," the story of a murdered assassin who forgets his revenge and pursues his revenge with the help of the cruel crew.
With tongue-in-cheek visual effects and a superb supporting cast that includes Katherine Waterston as Mary Jane, Katarina Dvorak as Joan and Erin O'Toole as her mother, "Killing Joan" is a film you have to die for in April. Director Ryan Prows delivers one of his best performances yet in this slasher film. Not much happens at the start of the film, but Joan has muscles to lend And she is in the midst of an intense battle with the Grue Crew for her life.
